Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Chaney.
Emily, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from The Evergreen State College, I was a dotcom kid in Seattle, which allowed me to buy my first house at 21! Then I was fired, laid off and dumped in a years time. I took it as a sign to move home to Denver. When I got here, I started applying for jobs and was told over and over I was “overqualified”. My social life and passion was live music so I took a job at a local venue and started bartending. I knew this wasn’t forever so on the recommendation of my Seattle realtor mentor I got my license.
I work for other agents part-time for a decade while bartending. When my mom got sick with cancer, I finally jumped ship and went on my own. I knew I wanted to spend as much time as I could with her. This decision changed my life because it forced me to hustle. And hustle I did becoming the Denver Metro Association of Realtors, Rookie of the Year my first year on my own. It’s five years later, my mom is gone but I keep hustling because she would have wanted to see me successful.
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, as I mentioned I was fired, laid off and faced a lot of personal struggles. So no, it hasn’t been an easy road. I try to remember that someone out there always has it harder than I do.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Emily Chaney story. Tell us more about the business.
Everyone knows 12 Realtors they say so you have to find your tribe. My tribe is creative, unique, and wickedly smart individuals. They often own their own companies from tattoo artists to lawyers. They are also teachers and community leaders though. They not only change the world they fill it with beauty and creativity. Some people say I work with the rock and rollers of Denver. I don’t think means just musicians, it’s trendsetters, influencers, and creatives of all subjects.
What sets me apart? I shoot straight and you always know my opinion whether it’s good or bad.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Real Estate has changed more in the last few years than it had in decades! The internet makes everyone a realtor right? Everyone can do our job, or so they think. This will continue. We will fight for our commissions and to show our value. Experience will be king though and ultimately, the value of having a good team behind what is usually the biggest financial transaction most people make will prove necessary.
