Meet Jason and Silvana Busch of Body Balance Strength & Wellness in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason and Silvana Busch.

Jason Busch has been in the fitness industry for 23 years in Boulder, CO. He started as a fitness trainer right out of college in 1995 with aspirations to go back to grad school for physical therapy. The gym had always played an important role bother personally and professionally in his life and the drive to open a gym was always there.
He opened his first gym in 1998 and has been refining and morphing the gym over the next couple of decades. He never made it back to physical therapy school and soon realized that he was able to work with clients doing the work he felt people needed to meet goals, but also do so in a pain-free environment, using a variety of different modalities from functional movement to strengthening.

Silvana Busch was born in Brazil and recognized that she was bigger than the country of Brazil and needed to see the world. She looked for an available plan and found Club Med. She worked for Club Med for almost nine years. During that time she moved around the world. Brazil, Mexico, France, Bahamas, and Israel. She was responsible for many things at Club Med but fitness was what she loved the most. After Club Med, she pursued a career as a massage therapist. With a constant thirst for knowledge, she continued to evolve her work until it became the myofascial release work that she does today. Combined with her knowledge of therapeutic yoga she is able to help her clients with their wants and needs.

Jason and Silvana met and married in 2007. At that time, Jason was working for a fitness franchise company and realized that he was unemployable. Silvana always had dreams of opening a yoga studio one day after discovering a love for yoga. When Jason and Silvana married, the financial crash of 2009 caused the company that Jason was working for to have to close down and lay off everyone. At that time, Jason and Silvana decided it was time to finally reopen Body Balance after many many years of discussing it. So, in the middle of the worst recession in recent times and throwing caution to the wind Body Balance was reborn at its current location. Truly in the spirit of melding body and mind.

Body Balance Strength & Wellness was reopened by Jason and Silvana in 2009 to serve a need in the community which was high-quality personal training with onsite wellness practitioners so that clients could be kept in the Body Balance community with communication between the trainers and the therapists. Body Balance currently offers high-level personal training, chiropractic care, functional medicine care, myofascial release work, sports and therapeutic massage care, yoga, and free movement assessment testing.

Body Balance has expanded two times since its opening in 2009. The reputation Body Balance has within the community is exceptional and has helped thousands of people since 2009 with a high degree of success both in goal achievement, pain reduction and management, as well as general fitness and wellness needs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not at all. There have been many struggles along the way. The first version of Body Balance was opened by Jason Busch in 1998. That gym was a struggle from day one. However, Jason managed to keep it open until 2006 when he finally closed the gym and took a job for a fitness franchise. During that time, there were three lawsuits. First was a construction lawsuit before the gym had even opened, in which the contractor underbid the job which led to a lawsuit. Second was over a lease dispute that lasted six years, and the 3rd was a personal injury lawsuit. A female client was injured doing a complicated movement that resulted in an injury while working with a different personal trainer and sued that trainer and the gym. Jason then heard that the landlord was not renewing Body Balance’s lease and so he looked for a new location. After finding one, he steamed ahead but was blocked by a weaker personal financial statement, which was needed for securing the new lease. Jason reached out to his old mentor to come together to open a new type of gym in Boulder and move to that location. His old mentor had ulterior motives and tried to take the gym away from Jason. Recognizing that caused him to sell the gym and take a break from the fitness industry. That is when he met his then to be wife Silvana. After marrying while Jason was working for the fitness franchise company, Silvana finally found a space to open a yoga studio. Silvana opened the studio and immediately realized the difficulties in relying on teachers to help grow and teach the classes. Then a luggage repair facility moved in directly adjoining her studio. The repair company was using chemicals and dyes which created really bad smells and people stopped coming to the studio. Jason then approached the landlord to have a discussion about the luggage repair business and he mentioned that he would remove the luggage company and open the space up for him to lease for gym space. That is when Jason and Silvana decided to reopen Body Balance Strength & Wellness.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Body Balance Strength & Wellness – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in melding the mind and the body. Every potential client starts with a fitness assessment. That helps us to determine what the client’s needs are. If they test well for movement, then they can start with basic strength training. If they test poorly then they have to start with soft tissue mobilization. Once they can meet basic standards for movement, then they can start basic strength training and progress from there. We get lots of referrals from orthopedic surgeons, physical therapist, chiropractors, and the general public.

We are very proud of the reputation we have built and our ability to help even the most complex cases. We have helped thousands of people relieve pain, get stronger, and get back there life. No other facility in Boulder has our reputation and ability to make those lasting changes in peoples lives.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are planning to add in more wellness retreats both domestic and international. We are expanding our soft tissue work and offerings and adding more specialists to help with the increased demand of our ever expanding business.
