Meet Larry Thompson Sr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Thompson Sr.

Larry, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started getting more involved in the political process as I continue to recognize the lack of diversity and equity African Americans acquire due to the limited population. That nature alone gave me the drive to make sure that we can build a properly functioning organization that could facilitate equity amongst African Americans within the Colorado Communities.

As I began the journey of equity building on a broader basis, I targeted people of importance to pass on my message to them, that I intend to reconstruct the foundations of the African American political influence and also create an olive branch of opportunity to develop a national plan that would place Colorado as the Epicenter for black political influence. I also made sure to create a network that was focused on not only progression but the change necessary to recruit. I began searching for an opportunity for structural support. I obtained that structural support through the Democratic Party. It allows me the opportunity to connect with many organizations that were for change. This allows me to create a platform of unity and be institutionally positioned to facilitate a unified front for the African American interest across the great state of Colorado.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has actually been smoother than expected, but the greatest challenge lies in the reconstruction of the belief of a leader. The main struggles I occur is communication with other leaders and sharing my vision without having years of involvement. My charisma and plan allowed many of the external communication struggles to be less antagonistic as the internal connections. I solidified my support by individual conversations and questions from leaders around the black community of Colorado. The majority saw the vision and believed in it and the direction I was seeking to push the community of the Youth and African Americans of Colorado.

Please tell us more about your work.
My main area is organizing and getting the community active through leadership and uncomfortable conversations, also connecting as a candidate to future constituents. I look to develop deep roots in not only the African American community but all marginalized communities through the efforts of collective organizing and supporting initiatives that reflect our values.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that there is a passion for growing. I love the idea of planting a seed and nurturing it. I do not find thinks that I don’t like but more so of things that can be introduced.
