Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Montez and John Reynolds, and the
Monkey Business Consulting (MBC) Group origin story.
The MBC Group came from an idea: how can we continue to serve Colorado businesses well and keep true to our values? Both Matthew and John had come from corporate sales backgrounds and bonded over the notion that sales does not have to be so impersonal, so rigid. While on the treadmill one day, Matthew envisioned a mascot: a monkey in a business suit standing tall in the Mile High City. He thought to himself, “What this city needs is an experiential firm that can be called on to throw big parties, release brands, and make a statement that lasts with an audience for a long while.” In other words, Denver needed a sales company that could not only produce big results, but be fun! Just like that, the Monkey Business Consulting Group was born. Having the ability to buy talent, organize a large group of people, troubleshoot on-the-fly, and make clients happy gave The MBC Group a solid jumping off point. Within the first thirty days of starting the business, they had landed their first client.
At its core, The MBC Group believes an organization should be nimble to its clients’ needs. Problem-solving, innovation, and creative thinking are some of their strongest attributes. Working directly and intimately with each client to discern their specific needs is central to the MBC manifesto: no cookie-cutter, one-size fits all website will do. When you become a client of MBC, your needs will be prioritized with gusto, whether it is building a new website from the ground up, creating organic content, managing social accounts, managing SEO, or spending very late nights learning something brand new (they once spent four days straight formatting and editing trial boards for a personal injury trial).
Matthew and John each spent 10 years for a big corporate company honing their craft. They started from the bottom up. According to John, they “both started as the crazy kids driving outdated vans engaging with consumers on the streets.” They went from working part-time for hourly minimum wage to full-time sales associates, managing huge accounts for commission. They were planning events, selling ideas/tactics/tools for business owners, and making their company hundreds of thousands of dollars. They left with sharpened tools and even sharper perspective. Now, they are in it for the client, not the corporation.
The MBC wants to sit down and connect with business owners looking to drive new business but are perhaps “time poor” and wanting to finesse their online presence and give it a unique flair. One meeting with Matthew and John, and you’ll realize that marketing your business online does not have to be intimidating or stressful. The MBC group will not only give you the results you are looking for, they will consider you and your business a friend. They’ll laugh with you, cry with you, and work with you until your vision is realized.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every business has struggles, the MBC Group is no different. Many small businesses are struggling in the current climate, for example. Several of our biggest clients were in the food and hospitality industry, and we lost those contracts early on in the pandemic. It seemed even harder because we had worked so closely with them for so long, it felt like losing a friend. But because of the relationships we built, we are hoping we will see them again soon. At this time, we are feeling more like a team than ever, and hoping all our clients will be able to come back stronger. We call our selves the Dream Team, because we tend to be optimistic no matter what and just “get it done.” We are excited to adapt and find new ways of helping our clients grow while we navigate the post-pandemic frontier.
Please tell us about the company.
As a company The MBC Group has 4 pillars:
1. Build a brand – building a website, creating a brand identity, thinking ahead where you should live as far as outreach.
2. Create Content – writing custom content long form or designing flashy gifs and cartoons. Visuals and words are our tools of the trade.
3. Manage Voice – organic posting and paid outreach work in tandem to drive new consumers to your brand.
4. Analyze – using the many tools available, how do you view your success. The MBC Group will analyze what we see and share any amount of information you’d like. Many in the space “data dump” pile information high so it’s overwhelming, I’m partial to an executive summary, but the total amount of data needs to be there to support it. Transparency is key in a relationship, business or otherwise.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Each and every one of our clients has helped us grow and deserves our thanks. Their guidance, feedback, and trust continues to shape our company. We are thankful to our former business partners and colleagues, who have offered so much advice and wisdom. And truly, we couldn’t have done this without the support of our friends and family; they have been there from the ground up, through all the ups and downs. They are the rock.
