Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Burtt.
Rocky Mountain raised, and international touring artist, Megan Burtt is a decorated performing songwriter. Since her sophomore release “The Bargain”, she has performed at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater, been featured with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, toured Europe, toured across the US, and supported artists like Gregory Alan Isakov, Chris Isaak, Leann Rimes, and Marc Cohn. Guitar World calls band leader, Megan Burtt “Pulsing, powerful and lovely. Burtt gracefully manipulates words and melody into a sultry delight.” Burtt is a Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, Kerrville, and Westword Songwriter of the Year. She is currently working on her fourth full-length album in New York City with producer Louis Cato (Stephen Colbert house band, Stay Human).
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well, I live in America – so I suppose so. I’ve also always been my own boss, which is a plus for me. However, full-time music is always a hard road. I graduated from college when the market crashed. There is an ever-evolving industry to keep up with. Figuring out who to monetize your art is always challenged realistically, morally, emotionally…
I’m lucky because I love what I do, so it’s a mostly labor of love.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a mostly a one-woman show. My business is a hat shop of management, marketing, performance, production, songwriting, teaching. It’s always evolving depending on what season of writing and record-making I’m in.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have found a mentor right when I got to college and had weekly meetings until my dying day. I think mentorship can be the difference of a successful life or not – someone with perspective, wisdom, who believes in you and that you trust helping guide you through this big life. Especially as a musician – we often fall into and/or are required to be entrepreneurial with our training being trial and error.
