Meet Pete Charrette of Cap’n Pete’s Power PE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pete Charrette.

Pete, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the creator of Cap’n Pete’s Power PE. I am an award winning, nationally-board certified physical education teacher with more than 30 years of teaching experience. I have developed more than 750 PE and health resources that are currently being used by educators across the world. I sell digital products on some educational exchanges and through my PE website.

I present seminars and workshops at the district, state and national levels and have designed an award-winning physical education website. My seminars are packed full of practical information and useful tools and resources to help teachers’ establish and maintain physical education programs of excellence.

I have an impactful online presence on several social media platforms including Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook. I have also created and currently maintain a popular PE blog and have presented online for prominent global PE summits and been a guest on a number of PE podcasts.

I was a physical education teacher for 30 years in Georgia and just recently retired. I recently presented at the SHAPE Colorado Conference in Aurora, Colorado.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been designing educational materials, templates, visuals, activities and games for 15 years. At first, I gave away many of the resources through my school web page. There were very few web pages created by physical education teachers back 15 years ago. I was a pioneer in the PE web page field (with no tech background) and made many mistakes and struggled with the process greatly at the start. The struggle with making an attractive and user-friendly site helped me understand design which helped me to produce the educational resources that many are using in the field now. As an educator, I also had very little if any business knowledge and had to learn “on the fly” how to market and sell digital materials. I made many mistakes along the way and now find that I am always having to learn and stay current to be relevant in today’s market.

Please tell us about Cap’n Pete’s Power PE. What should we know?
Educational Resource Design:

I design digital educational materials that help physical education and health teachers. They include posters, signs, bulletin boards, activities, awards, assessment materials, templates, game sets, and powerpoint presentations.

What sets me apart: My materials help both teachers and students. They are educational but also “kid-friendly”. They are attractive, eye=catching and engaging.

I strive each day to provide teachers the information, tools and resources to help them establish and maintain physical education programs of excellence. My activities and visuals are designed to be developmentally appropriate with purposeful and creative instruction that focuses on developing and improving students’ personal fitness, motor skills and social interaction.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have a deep passion for physical education, and it is important to me that I either spark a new passion in other teachers or rekindle the passion they once had.

Whenever I plan a lesson or design an activity or visual, I think back to my childhood and remember the things that were interesting, important and relevant to me then. I use this filter when I create, plan, instruct and assess my own students and have continued to use it when I design resources and present concepts and ideas to other teachers.
