Meet Traci Remley of White Buffalo Co in Castle Rock and Littleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Remley.

Traci, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The White Buffalo Co originally started as a small hobby. I was pregnant with my first and while decorating her room discovered my love for creating and handmade things. I first started off selling mostly vintage and antiques and a few small crafts I made. Eventually, it expanded into more of a father-daughter operation. My dad did most of the building and me… Well, did everything else lol. As it grew I discovered a passion for small business entrepreneurs and artists. I now not only carry my dad’s amazing creations but also tons of other products made by artists in Colorado and around the US. I not only love unique beautiful creations but I love getting to know the artists behind the work. During this time my husband and I also started fixing flipping homes. Working together we have been designing and remodeling now for over ten years. It doesn’t feel like a job to me, it just feels like fun with my husband. Most recently we turned a cookie-cutter suburban home custom, and now we are living in a 1970 farmhouse making it into our dream home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. On the shop side of my business most recently I’ve experienced my biggest failure yet. I went in on a huge shop in cherry creek and after a year they had to close their doors. I had left my current shop at The Barn in order to try out this Cherry Creek shop. It was a risk and I’m glad I took it. It may not have worked out but I learned more in that year then I have in all of the eight years of doing business. I am now back at The Barn in Castle Rock and know I will do it way better this time around because of the lessons I learned.

The first fix and flip my husband and I did together was in 2007… pre-marriage. The recession hit, Kyle (my then boyfriend now husband) lost his job. We could not sell the fix and flip and lost a ton of money on the deal. It was a really hard time but looking back I’m so glad we didn’t throw in the towel there. Since then we’ve made smarter buys and had tons of success but if we had quit after that first flip I wouldn’t be where we are today.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The White Buffalo Co – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
On the shop side of my business, I am most proud of the products I sell. Almost all are local artists that I have personally found over the years. I’m proud to support the little guys… being a little guy myself. With the amazons of the world being so big I’m proud to create a space you can’t find anywhere else. My unique bohemian farmhouse style is bringing a fresh fun look to castle rock and I’m proud to represent and promote the other small businesses I am working with. On the real estate side, I am proud of our unique style. We don’t just put basic fixtures in to get the job done. We pick finishes that we love regardless of the trends. We have found that people love our style so by staying true to that we create unique homes in a very cookie-cutter world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
On the shop side of my business I actually predict that the world is changing rapidly. People want to be able to shop online and retail will probably see a huge shift in the near future. I still see the unique boutiques being shopped at because people want that small town feel but I would be wrong to dismiss the online world. I am hoping to launch an online shop in the near future offering the same amazing artists I have in my brick and mortar. Real estate is always changing. Ups and downs are inevitable. My guess is home prices will see a drop or plateau here very soon but with Colorado’s growth, I think it’s a very promising industry. As long as we continue to offer amazing design and unique properties I think people will continue to love what we have to offer.
