Small Business of the Day: Conversations with Deb Matlock of Wild Rhythms

Today’s Small Business of the Day features an interview with Deb Matlock. Please find our conversation below.

Thanks so much for joining us today. We’re excited for our readers to learn more about Wild Rhythms, LLC. Kick things off for us – what should they know?
Since 2003, Wild Rhythms, LLC has helped people discover and develop their deep, sacred, authentic, and empowered connection to wild nature and the more-than-human world.

Our diverse range of training programs is designed for life coaches, educators, counselors, clergy, and holistic practitioners seeking to incorporate unique and innovative nature connection work into their practices. We also provide private nature-based spiritual life coaching for individuals. In addition, we offer a rich array of retreats, workshops, presentations, and custom programs, each designed to enhance awareness, foster outdoor experiences, and deepen connections with spirit, animals, and the earth. These engaging, reflective, and experiential programs are open to the public and can be tailored for groups and organizations upon request.

Wild Rhythms is a deeply personal brand. Since its beginning in 2003, the company has not wavered in its commitment to environmental ethics, supporting other small businesses, developing authentic and lasting relationships with clients, and delivering high-quality offerings. What makes Wild Rhythms unique in the field of nature connection work is that its founder, Deb Matlock, draws from her life-long deep, sacred, and communicative connection with wild nature and has over 25 years of experience working in nature connection and environmental education. Additionally, she is completing a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies focusing on integrating the more-than-human voice into nature connection programs. So, Wild Rhythms programs are very balanced in bringing deep personal experience and professional academic rigor together.

What is your favorite service offering and why?
I love the Wild Rhythms Certified Practitioner training. It is a unique, soulful, and highly professional offering for life coaches, counselors, educators, healers, or other practitioners interested in creating their signature body of nature connection work. This training supports practitioners as they craft their life experience, training and certifications, and passions into a body of nature-based work that supports their vision for their clients and communities.

Wild Rhythms work is more than just a practice. It’s about building a solid foundation in your own eco-spiritual journey. As a practitioner, it guides you towards deep collaboration with the places where you work and the more-than-human voices inherent in those places. This unique approach empowers you to create offerings that are not just unique but deeply connected to your clients and communities, enhancing your awareness and connection.

I created this program because I wanted to offer intensive training that was cohort-based, rooted in philosophy and practical application, and was not in any way standardized. I strongly feel that nature connection work needs to be created with the practitioner and placed in deep collaboration. This course is definitely not a list of activities or formulas but rather a deep weaving of experience, wild wisdom, and practical logistics. Everybody’s work is unique, and the world needs all of it. I am honored to help support this process for folks by offering this program.
