What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

Every industry has its myths—stories insiders repeat until they sound like truth. But behind the slogans and the spin are unspoken (and sometimes unnoticed) realities – we asked some of the wisest folks we know to share what lies they’ve noticed in their industries.

One of the biggest lies the self-help industry tells itself is that healing is about becoming better. More evolved. More enlightened. More “high-vibe.” It sells the illusion that if we just do enough work, buy enough courses, or “let go” of enough pain, we’ll finally arrive at some perfect version of ourselves that no longer struggles. Coming from the industry of tap dancing I think the biggest lie is most often about the art form’s history. Tap dancing is truly a black art form that originated in Africa through foot stomping and drum related tribal dances (an important one being the Juba). The biggest lie my industry tells is rooted in hustle culture—that constant grinding somehow equals worth. I’ve built my work around teaching self-care, and yet this is something I’ve had to relearn over and over again myself. You can’t pour from an empty cup. The biggest lie in our industry is that you have to wait for permission. Too many creators believe they need someone else: a gatekeeper, a manager, a festival, a network, to validate them before they can move forward. That mindset keeps people stuck. Read more>>
